Q: Is there a cost to set up and use Digital Yahrzeit™?
A:  No, the Mount Sinai Digital Yahrzeit application is free for all registered users whether or not they have loved ones buried at the Mount Sinai cemeteries.

Q: What time should I light my Digital Yahrzeit Candle?
A: Traditionally, the Yahrzeit candle is lit at sunset on the evening preceding the Yahrzeit, (in the Hebrew calendar days begin at sunset).

Q: Is there a special prayer to recite when I light the Digital Yahrzeit candle?
A: There are no special prayers or blessings to recite, however many people chose to say the Kaddish, El Malei Rachamim, Eishet Chayil/ A Woman of Valor or Psalm 23 / The Lord is My Shepherd.  These prayers are included in the Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries Chapel Prayer Book and can also be viewed on this Link.

Q: What if I am not certain about the exact day or year when my loved one passed away?
A: In these cases, we encourage you to select a designated date which is closest to the date you believe the death occurred.  This date will then be stored in our database for all future years.

Q: What happens if I forgot to light the candle on the actual date of the Yahrzeit?
A:  Do not worry. Your Digital Yahrzeit candle can be lit on any date, not just the actual date of the Yahrzeit.

Q: When else should I light the Digital Yahrzeit candle?
A: Yahrzeit candles are traditionally lit every year at sundown preceding the start of Yom Kippur, and at sundown preceding the last day of Sukkot, Passover and Shavuot. These holidays are the ones when a Yizkor Memorial Prayer Service usually occurs in synagogues.

Q: My Digital Yahrzeit Candle has disappeared.  What happened to it?
A: In order to keep your Digital Yahrzeit candle lit, this window must remain open and visible for the full 24 hours. If you close the Digital Yahrzeit pop-up window or shut down your computer your candle will extinguish before the 24 of Yahrzeit hours are completed.
